Camino de Santiago Day 17
Day 17: I woke up at 6 AM and left the hotel at 6:45 AM. It was a cool (if not somewhat cold) morning and it was a straight shot out of town about 11 miles until the next town. The camino in between was all farmland (sunflowers and wheat) with a gentle rise. The first town I came to was Calzadilla de la Cueza. I stopped there for breakfast (pizza, coffee, and an energy drink) at Hostal Restaurante Camino Real for about a half hour at 10 AM. From there, the next town was Ledigos. I was excited to stop at a brewery there (best in the region) but it was closed on Wednesday--bad luck. Instead, I stopped at Albergue La Morena and had an Aquarious which was refreshing. Following Ledigos, I walked to Terradillos de los Templarious, the town famous for the mythic goose that lays golden eggs; the town was also a onetime base for the Knights Templar. Following that town, I went to Moratinos, where they have 500 year old bodegas (wine cellars) dug into a hill. I stopped next to the cellars at one of the winemakers in town and sampled a red wine. After leaving town, I then passed through San Nicolas, the last town in the province of Palencia. After exiting the town, I soon passed over the border into Leon (lion in Spanish). So there I was, a Leo stepping into Leon during the zodiac time for Leo. About a mile or so later I arrived at the halfway point of the Camino de Santiago! So 250 miles down, 250 miles to go. About 3 miles later I arrived in Sahagun, a larger town with multiple places to explore. One of the sites I visited was the ruins of an old monastery from 1099 AD. I stayed at Los Balcones del Camino, a nice apartment style accommodation with great location and great room. I had a tapa at El Arco near the old monastery ruins and had dinner at Restaurante Luis in Plaza Mayor. After dinner I went back to the hotel, relaxed, and slept.
Distance hiked: 24 miles
