Camino de Santiago Day 26
Day 26: I woke up at 4:55 AM and left Albergueria Frade at 5:20 AM. As soon as I left the tiny village of O’Cebriero, the darkness of the mountains and fog was all consuming. There were no stars, no lights, dense fog, and I could not even see the hand in front of my face when my flashlight was off. I used my iphone flashlight and AllTrails app to navigate for the next hour and forty-five minutes down the mountain. It was actually a lot of fun and was a little chilly but felt nice after all the heat. I passed through some small villages with a few street lights, but other than that, it was me and the one meter sphere of the flashlight glow. Finally the sun started rising but the sky remained a gray haze because of all the fog. Around 8 AM, I stopped at Casa Galego for breakfast in the town of Fonfria. It was a modern place and it was all around excellent. I had three eggs mixed with chorizo and a café. After breakfast I continued down the mountain and there were great views as the fog slowly lifted around 9 AM. I made it to the town of Tricastela (just over the half way point) around 10:30 AM but did not stop since I had had that great breakfast in Fonfria. The camino split in two in Tricastela and I took the route that was shorter but went up a mountain (3 miles of incline). I climbed up through a couple small villages, got some great views again at the top of the mountain, and then had 7 miles of decline on the way down. Coming down was great and there were plenty of forests and farmland. I stopped at Casa Cines Restaurant for lunch around 1 PM and had chicken fingers, French fries, and a nice cold beer. It was great. I then continued on the final 3.5 miles into Sarria. Once in Sarria I checked into Albuerge Puente Ribeira; it is right on the river Sarria that runs through the city. I checked into a very clean and modern room so it was great. I showered, did laundry on site, and relaxed until the laundry was finished. After laundry I set off and explored all the sites: Church of St Mary, Church of St Salvador, Castle of Sarria, Ponte da Aspera (old stone bridge), and Capilla de San Lazaro (old pilgrim hospital prior to 1700s turned chapel). I then had a beer at O’Meigallo and ate dinner at Casa Barrio (the ice cream dessert with strawberries was incredible). Following dinner I went back to the albergue and went to sleep.
Distance hiked: 24 miles
