Camino de Santiago Day 12

Day 12: We had a lazy morning and slept in at Hostal B. Tatiana’s bus schedule dictated that she arrive in Villafranca Montes De Oca (a town) 7 miles away at 1 PM; that meant that there was no reason to start hiking before 10 AM to meet her there. The first town I came to was Tosantos. I left the camino for a detour over to a church built into a cliff rock facade. The church was closed but it was nice to sit up there for a while and take in the views. I then passed through two more towns on my way to meet Tatiana and have lunch at Hotel San Abad in Villafranca Montes De Oco. Lunch was great (garlic soup with pork fat and a fried egg in it, and a pasta dish). After lunch the camino climbed up into the surrounding hills. We came into a forest and walked through that forest for most of the day. Later in the afternoon we arrived at Monasterio de San Juan Ortega. It was a beautiful monastery, constructed in 1142. We then arrived in the town of Ages at around 6:15 PM and had dinner at La Rustica. The hamburger at La Rustica was easily one of the top three best hamburgers of my life; they also had excellent beer aged in a wine barrel. We then hiked to Atapuerca, where the oldest known human remains were found (over 400,000 years old). The bones have been moved to Burgos but we walked by the site where they found the bones. In Atapuerca, we checked in to Hotel Rural Papasol at 8:15 PM, showered up, and then relaxed the rest of the night.

Distance hiked: 18 miles
