Camino de Santiago Day 13

Day 13: We woke up at 7:30 AM and were out the door by 8:30 AM (Tatiana left a half hour before me at 8 AM to get a head start). It was a cool morning which was great. Coming out of Atapuerca, the first thing we did was climb Matagrande. At the top of Matagrande was a cross and I sat up there a bit at the summit which was nice. After Matagrande, we passed through a valley filled with sunflowers and wheat. We passed through another three small towns on the way in to Burgos. Tatiana caught a bus in Castaneres and I walked the remaining 4 miles into Burgos. Burgos was my favorite city of the trip so far. Founded in 884, it’s an ancient city and is the capital of the province of Burgos. People, architecture, food, and plazas, Burgos has it all and was a romantic city. We visited the Cathedral of Saint Mary of Burgos (consecrated in 1260) first before eating a tapa at En Tiempos de Maricastana. We then tried a beer at Cerveceria Morito. We went to lunch at Casa Ojeda and shared a massive plate of beef (it reminded me of the old 76er from The Great Outdoors) and wine. We polished off the beef no problem. We then went back to the AC Hotel (Marriott) and took a nap for an hour. After waking up, we walked around town and climbed to the castle on the hill and saw some of the city’s cathedrals. For dinner, we went to Norte GastroBar and had more tapas. We then walked back through the main square and called it a night around 11 PM.
