Camino de Santiago Day 19

Day 19: I woke up at 6:45 AM and ate breakfast at 8 AM. I then departed for my hike around 9 AM, exiting the city via a bridge. The camino remained beside roads most of the day and passed through multiple suburbs of Leon. There was an occasional bridge and river but nothing spectacular along the way (more farmland and suburban buildings). Closer to Leon, however, I came over a bridge and the city was below with the mountains behind it. It was a great view. After walking through the newer parts of the city, I finally arrived at the medieval part. The medieval part of the city of Leon is surrounded by a city wall, parts of it built 1000 years ago and the rest by the Romans. Inside that wall, the city was rich and colorful, with many plazas, cathedrals, and restaurants. After weaving my way through the ancient streets and seeing many of the city’s cathedrals, I then had two beers in Plaza Mayor while waiting for hotel check-in time. In Leon, every drink comes with a tapa so I was able to snack a bit as well which was great. I checked into Parador (5 star hotel, thank you Tatiana) and it was very luxurious (I think the best in the city). Making use of the accommodations, I took a bath in the tub, showered, relaxed a bit, and then went back out on the town. I went to Plaza Santo Domingo, Calle Ancha, and stayed in that general vicinity. I had a couple drinks and that came with more tapas! It was a very enjoyable experience and Leon is one of my favorites of the trip so far. After walking the city a bit more, I came back to the hotel and slept.
