Camino de Santiago Day 2

Day 2: I woke up at 6:45 AM and had a nice breakfast at Hotel Roncesvalles. I left the hotel at 8:40 AM and began another long day to Larrasoana. The hiking terrain came as a great relief, however, as the path was mostly flat and stretched from one small Spanish town to another with farmland and forest in between. The first town I walked through was Burguete-Auritz. Ernest Hemingway made this small town famous when he stayed at the Hostel Burguete in 1924 and 1925; he describes it in his novel The Sun Also Rises. Being that I’ve read all of Hemingway’s books and always seem to end up in the same places as him, I made a stop in at the Hostel Burguete (I only entered the lobby before departing). I then continued down the Camino and passed through another small town, Espinal. The next stretch had farmland and forest again until I reached Bar Dena Ona, a small restaurant and market. Being that it was lunch time, I had ham and eggs, a popular Spanish dish (and one of the only dishes available at that time). After lunch, I had several small climbs into and out of forest with some nice views on either side. I then stopped at a small stand in Alto de Erro and order three bottled-waters (I had recently run out of water and was thirsty!) and a banana again. I sat there for about 20 minutes and polished off two of the waters before continuing on. The next big town was Zubiri, where I stopped in at Bar Valentine and ordered a local red wine. It came cold which was refreshing (have to sample the local fare right?) Although most of the peregrinos (or pilgrims) ended the day at Zubiri, I pushed on another three miles to get a little closer to Pamplona. Tatiana was due to arrive in Pamplona the next day so I wanted to do a quick 10 miles and get there before her. So after Zubiri, I pushed on through the heat and followed the camino up and down several more times until I arrived at Casa Tau in Larrasoana. Upon arriving I took a cold shower (it’s been so incredibly hot every day that I only crave a cold shower), did my laundry, and then ate the Pilgrim’s menu at a local super market/restaurant.

Distance hiked: 17 miles
