Camino de Santiago Day 5

Day 5: We woke up at 8 AM and I left at 9:15 to begin my hike while Tatiana relaxed for an extra hour and took a bus out to a neighboring suburb along the camino to meet up with me. We met at a park in Zizur Mayor (4 miles into my hike) at 10:45 AM and continued onward together. The trail passed through some farmland and rose steadily for the first half of the day. We stopped at a hostel in Zariquiegui and got ham and cheese sandwiches and then ate them in the shade of a nearby church. We then continued on and stopped for water and some nachos at Camino de Perdon (a hostel) in Uterga. After leaving Uterga, we hiked another couple miles before stopping at the town of Muruzabal for a couple of waters and a beer at Bar Los Nogales. (There is currently a record heatwave in Spain and these days have been scorchers. Taking breaks and drinking gallons of water was essential to make it through the day. Each day has reached temperatures over 100 degrees). We finished our day when we entered Puenta La Reina (Bridge of the Queen) and stayed at Hotel Bedean. After relaxing in the hotel for two hours, we had a great dinner downstairs at the hotel restaurant (churrasco, lamb, and their local wine, Valdizarbe) and then left the hostel to walk around the medieval city. The bridge that the town is named after (Puente la Reina) was built in the early 11th century and is the bridge featured on the 10 Euro bill. The city itself was amazing to walk around as it definitely had a medieval feel. Even the Knights Templar used to call the town home. It was fun to think about the thirty or so generations that have walked those streets before us.

Distance hiked: 15 miles
