Camino de Santiago Day 7
Day 7: We woke up at 8:15 and ate breakfast at Namaste at
9:30, when it opened. We walked through the streets of Estella and climbed
slowly out of the city toward the vineyards nearby. The first stop was at
Bodegas Irache, one of the region’s winemakers. The company installed a free wine
fountain for peregrinos (pilgrms) hiking by on the camino. Tatiana and I filled
up our water bottles with wine (as all the peregrinos do), and continued
onward. The wine tasted great! We then tried to stop at a second vineyard along
the camino but they were closed. A lot of businesses have closed down during
this extreme heat wave. On this day the temperature reached 107 degrees!
Leaving wine country, we climbed up a hill and the path wove through the
forest. We stopped in a shaded spot with a great view and drank the wine we
filled from the fountain. It was a nice picnic on the trail. We then dipped
down into some farmland before passing through Azqueta, a small town on the
camino. The camino continued to climb all the way up to Villamayor de Monjardin,
another old town next to a castle (Castillo de San Estaban de Deyo) on a hill.
We ate lunch at Bar Llarria, a small bar restaurant in the town. Following
lunch, I walked with Tatiana down the camino and then off the camino to a bus
stop in Urbiola. She was catching a bus to Los Arcos while I finished off the
final 7.5 miles of the day. After she got on the bus, I walked back to the
camino (slackpack style – Tatiana took my big bag with her and all I brought
was water), and started the 7.5 mile slug through Spanish farmland to Los
Arcos. This section had absolutely zero shade, and as I stated earlier, the
temperature was 107 degrees, so this section was somewhat of a death march. I
would not be surprised if several people got heat exhaustion today. I made it
through fine though, and met up with Tatiana at Hostal Suexte, our
accommodations for the night. Hostal Suexte was another great find. I
immediately took a cold bath to cool down and then after lounging in the air
conditioning for an hour, we went out to the main plaza near Santa Maria church
and had dinner. After dinner, we bought several waters with electrolytes to
replenish salts and then rested in the hotel before going to sleep.
Distance hiked: 14.5 miles
