Camino de Santiago Day 22
Day 22: I woke up at 7:15 AM and relaxed in bed until 8 AM. I got up and had breakfast at the downstairs buffet and then went back to the hotel room. Hotel check out time was noon and I had a 13 mile hike to my next destination (~4 hours) so I decided to relax in the nice hotel room for as long as possible, making use of the internet to do work. I opened my balcony doors and listened to the sounds of the plaza below and the church bells ringing across the city. I left the hotel at 11 AM and walked out past the palace and cathedral and through the city. My first stop was about an hour later at Bar Cris in Murias de Rechivaldo; I had an electrolyte drink. Also at Bar Cris were three people I knew (Englishman, Irishwoman, and Hungarian woman) so we chatted a bit there before continuing onward. After about a mile I separated from the group so that I could film more (shooting a documentary after all) and hike by myself. The next town was Santa Catalina de Somoza and I passed straight through. I did find a nice picnic bench in the shade just past the town and relaxed for a couple minutes there. The next town I came to was El Ganso (the goose). There was a Knights Templar garrison stationed there in the 12th century to protect pilgrims on the way to Santiago. Since I had been to Terradillos de los Templarios a few days before (the story of the goose that laid the golden eggs), it made me think someone might want to investigate a bit underneath the town of El Ganso (in the story the parish buried the goose). Anyway, I stopped in at the Meson Cowboy (camino famous bar) and had a beer. I then pushed on the final 4 miles or so to Rabanal del Camino, another Templar town. I checked into my accommodations at The Stone Boat (another awesome place!), explored the town (11th century church built by Templars), ate dinner at La Posada de Gaspar at the high point of the town, and then went to sleep.
Distance hiked: 13 miles
